TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE
Section 1
what vs whatever
前者这个代词用于 that which,含有“限定”的意思,后者这个代词等于anything that,含有“任何”的含义。
比较:
Quality is what counts most. 质量重要之至。(=Quality is supermely important.)
Quality is whateve counts most. 不论什么东西,质量最重要。(=Anything that counts most is quality.)

where vs wherever
前者这个副词是做“在。。。地方”讲,相当于 at/to what place的意思。后者这个副词是做“无论在。。。地方”讲,相当于any such place 或者 anywhere的意思,而且语气要比前者强些,具有“让步”的势头。
比较:
Where there is oppression, there is resistance. 哪里有压迫,哪里就有反抗。
Wherever there is oppression, there is resistance. 只要哪里有压迫,哪里就一定有反抗。
Section 3
wash vs wash up
动词 wash 原来是做“洗涤”讲,它的宾语可以是复数名词也可以是单数名词;如果另外搭配了up这个副词,便是“洗尽”的意思了,所以它的宾语一定要用复数名词。(注意:美国英语有时候把 wash up 做“洗脸”或者“洗手”讲)
比较:
Please wash this dish. 请把这个碟子洗一洗。(也可以。。。these dishes)
Please wash up these dishes. 请把这些碟子都洗了。(不可以说:this dish)
Section 4
wet vs wetted
这两者都是动词 wet 的过去分词形式,只是前者多半用于自然现象,后者通常用于人为现象。
例如:
That slight shower has scarely wet the soil. 那场小阵雨还没有把田地弄湿。
The baby has wetted its bed again. 小宝宝又尿床了。
