TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE
Group 1
common vs mutual
The Arab people stand as one against their common enemy.
In Europe, English may be used as a common language.
our common ancestors 我们共同的祖先,不说our mutual ancestors
Group 2
comparable vs comparative
The music of Irving Berlin is scarcely comparable to that of Beethove.
The science and technology of yesterday are hardly comparable with those of today.
We all live in a comparative comfort in the countryside.
"Worse" is the comparative form of "bad".
A comparable car would cost far more abroad.
He is engaged in a comparative study of European languages.
Group 3
damage vs damages.
The insurance company has paid for the damage.
The insurance company has paid us the damages.
Group 4
dear vs dearly
The boss made money by buying cheap and selling dear.
He would dearly love to see his mother again.
Victory was dearly bought.
We solemnly warn these people: You will have to pay back the blood bebt, and pay dearly.
