Adult Education

In the UK, adult education covers a range of subjects from flower arranging to electronics and can lead to examinations and qualifications. The Open College, Open University, and Workers' Educational Association are adult-education bodies.

Open College is the institution established in 1969 to enable adult students without qualifications to study to degree level without attending regular classes. Open University teaching is based on a mixture of TV and radio lectures and demonstrations, personal tuition and summer schools. Announced by Harold Wilson in 1963 as a "University of the air," it was largely created by Jennie Lee, minister for the arts, from 1965.

Workers' Educational Association (WEA) aims to provide democratically controlled education for working people. It was founded in 1903 and first received grant aid for its classed in 1907. Since then it has been receiving financial aid from the government, while guarding its independence. Its activities are split between traditional liberal education and training for labor unionists. Many Labor Party politicians have either taught in or been taught in WEA classes.

Most adult education is provided by local education authorities (LEAs) and fees for classes are subsidized. In 1992 the government limited subsidy to work-related courses, a proposal which met with strong opposition from    many different bodies such as the LEAs and the Women's Institute. Stone Hill Mall

Stone Hill Mall has fewer large department stores than most malls but, instead, features more than 100 small specialty shops, while the few that are not used yet will be filled as soon as the mall's owners find proprietors (业主)who fit the mall's image.

One thing that makes Stone Hill Mall popular was that all of the stores remain open from 9 a.m. until 10 p.m., Monday through Friday. This favorable start has certainly been advantageous thanks to such features as its being the only shopping center in the area to provide free baby-sitting for children from two to eight years old and its offering restaurants to suit every pocket, with the possible exception of the highly budget-conscious. Furthermore, as far as movie entertainment is concerned, Stone Hill Mall tops Westgate Mall, which looked very impressive when it opened last year, with three separate cinemas.

Besides, the air-conditioning system makes sure a comfortable inside temperature of 25 degrees centigrade no matter what the weather is like outside, and in addition to its three beautiful fountains, the mall has a quiet garden area with comfortable benches and chair for shoppers who have become tired.

One complaint about Stone Hill Mall is that it is located outside the city, but there is a regular bus service between the mall and the city center. A further complaint might be that, although the mall is surrounded by trees to mix it with the scenery, it will be some years before these can effectively make the main buildings and the vast buildings and the vast parking lot a part of the area around.

Greenpeace

Greenpeace is an international environmental organization devoted to preserving the earth's natural resources and its diverse plant and animal life. The organization campaigns against nuclear weapons testing, environmental pollution, and harmful practices in fishing, hunting and other industries.

Greenpeace was founded in Vancouver British Columbia, Canada, in 1971 by members of the Don't Make a Wave Committee, a small group opposed to nuclear weapons testing by the United States military in Alaska. The group renamed itself Greenpeace to reflect the broader goal of creating a green a peaceful world.

Greenpeace won fame for its daring efforts intended to attract media attention to environmental issues. Greenpeace members in rubber boats have stopped whaling expeditions by positioning themselves between the whales and hunters' weapons. They used similar strategies in Newfoundland to protest the killing of baby harp seals, whose soft white fur is highly valued by clothing manufacturers. The organization is well known for climbing corporations skyscrapers and factory's tall chimneys to hang protest banners.

Greenpeace's radical style has often led to conflicts with corporations, local authorities, and even national governments. In 1985 the Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior, on a voyage to protest French nuclear weapons testing in the Pacific, sank in a New Zealand port, and the crew photographer, Fernando Pereira, got killed. Later, it was found out that something had been done by secret agents of the French military to the ship to cause the accident. The resulting scandal rocked the highest level of the French government, leading tot he resigning of Defense Minister Charles Hernu and the dismissal of general Pierre Lacoste, director of the French Secret Service.

During the 1990s Greenpeace has been troubled by internal disagreements over political strategy. Some members insist on a radical approach, emphasizing civil disobedience and physical confrontation. Other members, including the organization's leaders, are convinced that Greenpeace must work cooperatively with the companies and industries that have been its targets in the past.

Nobody Had Believed It Was Possible

In 1912, the Titanic hit an iceberg on its first trip across the Atlantic, and it sank four hours later. It was carrying 2207 people, but it had taken on enough lifeboats for only 1178 people. When the passengers tried to leave the ship, only 651 of them were able to get into lifeboats and 1502 people lost their lives.

Throughout the whole tragedy, the California was only ten miles away. Its officers were close enough to see the Titanic, but they did not understand the situation. They never received the Titanic's call for help, and they did not come to the rescue until too late.

First of all, nobody had prepared for such a tragedy. Nobody had believed that the Titanic could sink. The steamship company had thought that its ship would be completely safe in all situations. They had followed an old rule for the number of lifeboats, so they had supplied lifeboats for only half the people. And the passengers had not practiced lifeboat drills before the accident and they did not believe they were in danger.

The ship had already received six ice warnings on its radio when it struck the iceberg. But it had not changed its direction or its speed. It was impossible to change direction quickly enough when the iceberg came in sight. When the Titanic hit the iceberg, the radio officer on the California had just gone to bed. He had tried to warn the officers on the Titanic about the ice before he went to bed, but the officers had not listened.

After this accident, ocean travel change. Now there are always enough lifeboats for everybody. Ships do not go so far north in winter, and they watch carefully for ice. Radio officers work 24hours a day. A tragedy like the sinking of the Titanic should never happen again.

Weight on and off the Earth

We are so used to our life on the surface of the earth that it can be quite an effort for our mind to break free of all the ideas that we take for granted. Because we can feel that things are heavy, we think of "weight" as being a fixed quality in an object, but it is not really fixed at all. If you could take a one-pound packet of butter 4,000 miles out from the earth, it would weigh only a quarter of a pound.

Why would things weigh only a quarter as much as they do at the surface of the earth if we took them 4,000 miles out into space? The reason is this: All objects have a natural attraction for all other objects; this is called gravitational attraction. But this power of attraction between two objects gets weaker as they get farther apart. When the butter was at the surface of the earth, it was 4,000 miles from the center. When we took the butter 4,000miles out, it was 8,000 from the center, which is twice the distance. If you double the distance between two objects, their gravitational attraction decreases "two times two". If you treble the distance, it gets nine times weaker (three times three) and so on.

So this is one of the first things we need to remember: that the weight of an object in space is not the same as its weight on the surface of the earth.

What about the weight of our pound of butter on the surface of the moon? At the distance the pull of the earth is about 4,000 times smaller than it is here on the surface, so we can forget all about the earth-pull on our butter.

On the other hand, on the moon there will be an attraction between the butter an the moon: but the butter will weigh only about one-sixth as much as it does on the earth. This is because the moon is so much smaller than the earth. The amount of gravitational pull that a body produces depends on the amount of material in it. A packet of butter has a gravitational pull of its own; but this is very small in relation to the pull of something as large as the moon, or the earth, or the sun.

26. How much would four pounds of tea weigh if it was taken 4,000 miles out from the surface of the earth?
A. 1 pound.
B. 2 pound.
C. 3 pound.
D. 4 pound.

B. we are too familiar with the way things are to question the ideas.
C. we have proved that those ideas are correct.
D. we are so sure of ourselves that we never doubt anything on the earth.
正确答案是

A. it is fixed if it is    outside the earth's gravitational pull.
B. it decreases four times when it is 4,000 miles from the earth's center.
C. it varies with the change of the gravitational attraction between two objects.
D. things increase in amount as they are closer to the earth's surface.
正确答案是

29. We do not feel the gravitational pull of a packet of butter because _____.
A. it is too small to have a gravitational pull of its own.
B. its pull is so small that we tend to ignore it.
C. its pull disappears in the presence of the earth's gravitation.
D. it tends to melt and loses its gravitational pull.
正确答案是

30. The main idea of this passage is _____.
A. different weight systems in different places.
B. freedom from traditional ideas.
C. traveling from the earth to the moon.
D. the effect of gravitation on weight.

Film Stars Wanted

Want to see a good film -- without leaving the house? Well, just switch on the television. That's fine for most of us, but people couldn't do so 20 or 30 yeas ago. A visit to the cinema was "an evening out"; a film was something special. Young people still go to the cinema often. Children watch a lot of television. Films and film stars are a strong force in our lives. So it is    surprising how little film education there is in schools. Why don't more children learn how films are made, and why they are made? The best film education is when children make a film of their own.

This is not too difficult. Three things are important -- the cost, the idea of the film, and organizations. A four minute film can cost as little as '20. Schools can hire the necessary equipment. They can also borrow films that other children have made. This helps them see what is possible in a short film. Children will be making the film, so the main ideas for the film must come from them. When these have been agree on, the organization begins. Someone must write the film an plan the filming. Some children will be actors, others camera men, lighting men, technicians and so on. They all have to practice a lot before the film itself is made. They learn a great deal about the technical problems of films, and about themselves.

36. Going out for a film used to be a s occasion for many people.

37. According to the author, children should receive more film e.

38. This passage is mainly about children's film education through their own m.

39. Children must put forward the main i for the film they are going to make.

40. In addition to the learning of some specific t of making a film, children also learn about themselves.

41. L to Your Child More

To Joe, who lives in Texas, this means not opening his own mouth until his daughter closes hers. "Listen to the end, no matter what you are being told," he says. "If you blow up before listening to the whole story, be ready to apologize."

When your child has finished speaking, repeat for him what he just told you, then ask if that is essentially what he meant. Make sure you understand him before giving advice or taking action.

42. Current Changes in Their F

Nowadays, a great deal has changed. In a large number of cases factory workers earn as much as their middle-class supervisors. They seem slowly to be losing the feeling of inferiority they had in the past. In fact there has been a growing tendency in the past few years for the middle-class to feel slightly ashamed of their position.

43. F Changes in Attitudes over the Past 25 Years.

Over the last 25 years, British society has changed a lot. In some ways, however, very little has changed, particularly where attitudes are concerned. Ideas about social class--whether a person is of "working-class" or middle-class "--are one area in which changes have been very slow.

44. Value Your Child's O

The best parents, we found, know they must persist in certain decisions, no matter how much the kids might disagree. However, decisiveness does not mean ignoring the kids. Allowing them a voice in family issues carries two benefits. Children accept decisions better when they're at least consulted, and they also see themselves as a value part of the whole family.

45. T Less

Many parents have learned the hard way that what sounds like open communication is often the very thing that closes a youngster's ears and mouth. One mistake is the lecture, the long monologue(独白) that often starts with "When I was your age ..." Eighteen-year-old Kelly calls lectures " long, one-sided discussion in which I don't say much. " Kids shut down in the face of a lecture. They don't register any incoming information.

四. 完形填空(共10题,共30分)

阅读下面的短文,其中有十处空白,根据短文的内容在文中的空白处填上适当的字母,使之构成一个完整的单词。该单词的第一个字母已经给出。答案一律写在试卷的空格处。

Advertisements

An advertisement should be informative. The majority of advertisements, however, especially television commercials, are persuasive r(46) than informative. They tend to use emotive language and ideas that appeal to people's deepest instincts.

Advertising has become a very specialized activity in m(47) times. In the business world of today, s(48) is usually greater than demand. There is great competition b(49) different manufacturers of the same kind of product to p(50) customers to buy their own particular product. They advertise in newspapers and magazines, and sometimes o(51) competitions with prizes for winners. They also advertise on the screens of cinemas. M(52) important of all, in countries that have television they have advertisements p(53) into programs that will accept them. Manufacturers often spend large sums of money on advertisements.

We buy a particular product because we think it is the best. We u(54) think so because of the advertisements that say so. Some of us never pause to ask themselves i(55) the advertisements are telling the truth.
