The ability to see words on either side of the point at which your eyes focus is called peripheral vision (周围的视觉).    Foreign students of English often feel that it is impossible to (61) so many words at a single glance.    it is difficult for many native speakers, but it can be done.    It is (62) that has to be done if you are to read as rapidly as you should.    You can increase your peripheral vision by eye (63).
Equally important is the importance of moving your eyes from pint to point in a uniform rhythm (不变的节奏).    Slow reading often results from regression (回视), the number of times your eyes have to go (64).    While practising to increase your peripheral vision and uniform rhythm, you may (65) have to reread.    Do not get discouraged.    A smooth, forward rhythm comes with (66).    Eventually your speed will get to the point where your eyes move (67) forward without regression.
A final cause of slow reading is forming the sounds of each word, even though you might not speak them (68).    The average American speaks English at 180 to 200 words a minute.    If you read each word (69), it is impossible to read (70) than this.    Reading 2000 words a minute is a dangerously slow speed.

A light bulb (灯泡) in the restaurant where I worked burned out.    A co-worker got on a chair to change it.    But when he was unscrewing it, the bulb shattered, leaving the metal part stuck in the socket.    He couldn't get a firm grip on it, so another waiter tried.    Our co-workers passing by offered advice.    Someone suggested using a potato, but the only ones in the restaurant were too small.    I ran to a nearby grocery store to get a large one but it proved to be too soft.    By this time our manager had come over to supervise the operation and noticed the patrons (老顾客) at the closest table watching with interest.    "Don't worry," she assured them as I stood on the chair trying my best to unscrew the metal base.    "He won't fall on you."

Last year, while interning (实习) in Boston, I became fully aware of the influence that attitudes have on the body.    This recognition was brought forcefully to mind by two patients under my care who had stomach cancer.    Senior doctors from Harvard and Tufts University agreed that both men, about the same age, had similar involvement and that neither could be expected to live more than six months.    One of the men died two weeks later.    The other continued to live, was allowed to leave the hospital and was doing well at the time I completed my internship.
The first man seemed to have no reason for living.    He believed that even if he recovered there would be no way to resolve (解决) his day-to-day problems.    he seemed more afraid of living than of dying.    Death may have been an escape for him.    The man who did not die had a determination to live; in effect, he refused to become a statistic (统计资料) on an insurance probability curve (曲线图表).    Somehow, someway, he was certain he would get well and would be able to complete the plans for his life.
This incident made me realize the importance of the thoughts we think.    The direction they take actually constitutes (构成) our will to live or die.

My first wartime Christmas was coming.    I was in the training center in New Jersey and not sure if I could make it home for the holidays.    However, on the afternoon of December 23 the list was put up.    I was among the lucky soldiers who would have three-day passes.
It was Christmas Eve when I arrived home, and a light snow had fallen.    Mother opened the front door.    I could see beyond her, into the corner of the living room where the tree had always stood.    There were lights, all colors, shining against the green of a pine (松树).
"Where did it come from?" I asked.
"I told the gate boy to cut it after I had your call and he just brought it in this afternoon," my mother said.    "I wouldn't have had one just for myself."
The pine reached to the proper height, almost to the ceiling (天花板) and the Tree Top Crystal Star was in its place.    A few green branches reached about a little disorderly at the side, I thought, and there was a bit of bare (光秃秃) trunk (树干) showing in the middle.    But the tree filled the room with warm light and the whole house with the pleasant smell of Christmas.
"It's not like the one you used to find," my mother went on.    "Yours were always in good shape.    I suppose the gate boy didn't know where to look.    But I couldn't be critical (挑剔)."
"Don't worry," I told her.    "It's perfect."
I wasn't, of course, but at the moment I realized something for the first time: all Christmas trees are perfect.

Around 9.5 percent of primary school children in Nanjing use name cards as a social tool, Guangzhou-based Yangcheng Evening News reported.
The newspaper cited an investigation (调查) of students in more than 10 primary schools in Nanjing.    But Wang Xianjiong, schoolmaster of Nanshi Primary school, which was listed as being investigated, said he had not heard that any of his students had cards.    But he admitted it was not unusual for primary students to use name cards.    "Primary students should concentrate on their studies, instead of social communication," Wang said.
The Yangcheng Evening News report said most of the cards were prepared by the parents, who hoped the cards would improve their children's communication skills.    In China, most families have only one child, and many of these children are said to have poor social skills.    The report quoted primary student Jia Xiaoyong, a school monitor who decided to print his name cards.    He said he believed name cards would improve his efficiency to organize student activities.    But Wang Xianjiong said name cards were unnecessary for primary student.    A local education official named Pan said he was surprised and upset by the news.    He thinks education authorities (管理部门) and schools have long been engaged in organizing various activities to improve primary students' social life, and name cards alone could not make children more sociable.
"If children are kidnapped (绑架) by the outlaws, they can try to give their cards to kind people to seek    rescue," the report quoted a parent as saying.    Names, telephone numbers and e-mail and home addresses, hobbies and personal ambitions were often printed on the children's cards, the report said.
Many students themselves asked their parents to print the cards for the novelty (新奇) of having them rather than for communication, the report said.
