Who Stole the Money?
One evening Mr. Perkis was on duty when the phone rang.    He went to answer it.    It was Mrs. Black.
"Please, sir, come to my house.    I had 5,000 dollars stolen."
Mr. Perkis hurried to her house.    He asked Mrs. Black, "When did you find the money missing?"
"At seven, I put my money on the table in the living-room.    Then I went to wash my hair.    I came back at seven thirty and the money was gone."
"I see," Mr. Perkis said.    "Were you alone in the house?"
"Yes.    But my friend's daughter, Nancy, was in the next room."
"Let's talk to Nancy," said Mr. Perkis.    They went to Nancy's room.
Mr. Perkis sat on the only chair in the room.    The chair was cold.    Mrs. Black and Nancy sat on the bed.    Mr. Perkis saw some books on the floor near the chair.
"What were you doing this evening?"
"I was studying because I'll have a test tomorrow.    I sat on that chair reading all the time.    I never got up and never left the room.    But at about seven fifty I heard a sound, like someone closing the door.    I didn't go out to have a look, for I was too busy.    Maybe someone came into the house and took the money away."
After hearing that, Mr. Perkis was quite clear.    He said to Mrs. Black, "Well, you won't have to be worried, and you'll find your money soon."

American people like to say "Thank you" when others help them or say something kind to them.    People of many other countries do so, too.    It is a very good habit (习惯).
You should say "Thank you" when someone passes you the salt on the table, when someone walking before you keeps the door open for you, when someone says you have done your work well, or you have bought a nice thing, or your city is very beautiful.
"Thank you" is used not only between friends, but also between parents and children, bothers and sisters, husbands and wives.
"Excuse me" is another short sentence they use.    When you hear someone say to behind you, you know that somebody wants to walk past you.
It is not polite to break others while they are talking.    if you want to speak to one of them, say "Excuse me" first, and then begin talking.    You should also do so when you want to cough or make any unpleasant (不悦的) nose before others.
Let's all learn to say "Thank you" and "Excuse me".

Our sun is a star, and nine worlds move round it.    Worlds like these are planets (行星).
But there are other stars, other suns.    Not only thousands of them, but millions of them.    Do different stars have planets?    We can see the planets round our own sun.    But we haven't seen any more.    The stars are too far away from us.    Stars give out (发出) light, but the planets don't have any light of their own.    So we can't see them.    They're too far, and too dark.
